Original Items: Only One Lot of Available. This is fantastic! During WWI much of North East France and the surrounding areas became part of "No man's land", where constant trench warfare reduced the environment to a blasted out, desolate area. Repeated charges and changes in the front left huge amounts of material behind, often buried by later trench works, artillery fire, and the like, which means that for many years to come, any type of excavation in the area will turn up numerous artifacts. Though these artifacts reflect condition of those that were not lost to time, they very well could have been recovered from a French position long ago and cared for.

All items are in fantastic condition and is a perfect starting point for the younger collectors needing a place to start. The items included are a Canteen (Bidon), 3 leather ammunition pouches, rifle grease tin, (2) wool leg wrap puttees and mess kit (without utensils).

A lovely grouping ready for further research and display.

During World War I, France was one of the Triple Entente powers allied against the Central Powers. Although fighting occurred worldwide, the bulk of the French Army's operations occurred in Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Alsace-Lorraine along what came to be known as the Western Front, which consisted mainly of trench warfare. Specific operational, tactical, and strategic decisions by the high command on both sides of the conflict led to shifts in organizational capacity, as the French Army tried to respond to day-to-day fighting and long-term strategic and operational agendas. In particular, many problems caused the French high command to re-evaluate standard procedures, revise its command structures, re-equip the army, and to develop different tactical approaches.
